What is World Ocean Passive Acoustic Monitoring Day?

WOPAM is an initiative that establishes a window into the world of underwater sound across the planet on a single day. Researchers worldwide continue to contribute their marine, freshwater, and brackish acoustic recordings towards this large-scale collaborative study.
I record sounds from rivers, lakes and streams, can I still be part of WOPAM?

Yes! Though WOPAM started with a focus on the oceans, all aquatic sound is relevant to gaining a better understanding of the wildlife within these environments. We encourage anyone that listened below the surface from the 7-9th of June to become part of the WOPAM community.
I had hydrophones deployed and recording from June 7th to 9th, how can I contribute and be involved in the initiative?

We'd love to have as many participants as possible! You can reach out to Miles Parsons (m.parsons@aims.gov.au) or Isla Keesje Davidson (Islakeesje.davidson@cornell.edu) for more information and to be included. Any sampling rates and recording cycles are welcomed.
When can I start to see the results of this effort?

Expected recording sites will be continually updated, but many of these recorders are part of larger studies and are deployed for months at a time. As a result, the goal for collection of sound data from all participants is after this next WOPAM day (June 8th, 2024). Workshops and collaborative analysis projects will begin to emerge after that.
